How Many Korean Words Are There?

When you start learning a new language it’s a valid wondering how many words are there waiting for you to learn. Today we’ll discover how many words you need to learn if you’re serious about learning Korean.

How many Korean characters are there?

Before we answer the main question about the number of words vocabulary awaiting to learn, let’s start with visualising how many characters are there in Korean. The Korean alphabet is called Hangeul and it has 24 letters. Out of those 24 letters, it’s possible to create many different word combinations that all add to the beauty of the Korean language.

Now that we know how many different characters we have, we can answer the main question. As it’s not possible to prepare and provide a specific number of quotes as language is always evolving, let’s focus on what we know so far.

Depending on the source we can assume the Korean language has anything between 500,000 and 1,100,000 vocabulary. That’s a lot and this might add to the difficulty of learning Korean but there is also a positive side to it – YOU DON’T NEED TO LEARN ALL WORDS TO BE FLUENT.

The aforementioned number is based on one of the dictionaries of the Korean language and it’s a scary thought to picture learning all of those words. Even with 20 new words a day learning Korean might have taken more than 150 years and even then we’d have more words new words to learn because language is evolving every day.
